Hi,
I have a big5 pdb file which can be viewed by isilo for window
ver. 3.35. However after I've upgraded isilo to version 4.x,
the characters cannot be displayed properly. I try to specify
the encoding method in the display option, but it said that
the encoding is specified by the document and I can't change
it. How to fix it? Many thanks!

Which version of Windows are you running (95, 98, NT, XP, etc.)? Also, what does that "Text encoding" field say in the Document Information dialog (Edit menu/Document Information)?

Hi thanks for your reply. I am using chinese (big5) win98 and
isilo 4.1. The Document information -> Text encoding: Big5
But the characters are displayed as square boxes. Do you
know how to fix it?

The issue has to do with iSilo 4.x changing to using Unicode to support display of content in multiple languages. iSilo 3.x had no such support so display of content in languages other than English was only incidental. So with iSilo 4.x on Windows 9x/Me, you are going to need a Unicode font in order to view Chinese. This is not an issue for Windows 2K/XP. One such Unicode font is "Arial Unicode MS". Unfortunately it is not publicly available, but if you have MS Office 2000 or later, you will be able to install it from the its CD. Do a search on the web using google or something else to look for specific instructions. Assuming you have a Unicode font installed, then in iSilo, you will need to select it as the font to use using Tools menu/Options/Font.

No, I have installed the "Arial Unicode MS" but still does
not have proper character display (see the attached images).
It will never happen in version 3.35. It seems
that it is the encoding error, please check. Many thanks!

Try changing the Sans Serif, Serif, and Monospace font families to use Arial Unicode MS also.

The same. I have tried every font combination for
the unicode before but no luck, the characters are
still displayed as the square boxes. Also everytime
I choose and confirm a font combination in the option
menu, it will display as default again in the "Font family
name:" entry. I really think that it is the encoding problem
of isilo 4.x for win98 to display mult-lang docs. Can I
force to select text encoding eventhough it is specified
in the doc? Please check! Many thanks! :(

The Font tab is not used to specify which font family to use to display a document, as a document can make use of multiple font families. Documents converted by iSiloX will use the Sans Serif family unless overridden by inline font family specifications in the source document content.
The Font family field is just a list, not a setting. That is why it just goes back to Default, since it is the first entry in the list.
The Font tab is used to specify which font to use when displaying a given font family. So if the formatting information of your document says to display everything using the Sans Serif font, it does not matter what font you choose for the "Default" font family. Btw, the "default" font family is used to display content for documents where there is no font family specification such as Palm doc and plain text documents.
So again, please try setting the font for all the families to Arial Unicode MS.
See the attached screenshots. It is with iSilo 4.15 on Windows 98 Traditional Chinese with the Sans Serif font family set to use the Arial Unicode MS font.
