flash memory speed questions

I'm having issues with a flash memory card that I've had a while. Its just too slow to deal well with a 25 megabyte document I've got. I'm looking to replace it, but I'm wondering if there is a resource for speed information on these cards.

Or can someone recommend one that's working quickly and provide transfer speeds on it.

I need a sd card, and I'm looking at getting a 1 gig card which are running $100.

I have heard that you can speed up the performance of your memory card by following these steps:
Reformat the card to file system: Fat16, Sector Size 512 bytes, Cluster Size 4kb. and then copy your large isilo file to the card first, then put everything else on it.
By following these steps some have noticed a great speed improvement.
