Accents and Encoding

Hello everyone

I'm so glad iSilo has finally been developped for the iPhone/Touch - and it's been accepted by Apple.

iSilo was my main-used app on my PalmOS based Clié TH55 - by far !- and I only switched with to the iPhone/Touch recently and reluctantly (sort of, anyway).

I've only discovered it was available tonight, and have just posted a rather extensive note on my blog.

The set-up is easy, the transfers work fine and everything is allright.
I only have one problem, with french web sites and with accents.

Obviously it's an encoding problem, but I don't know where it comes from, since I've used my old iSiloX settings that worked fine with my Clié.

So, is it a problem on :
- the iSilo app on my mac ?
- a setting on the iSilo app on the iPhone ?
- or is it a problem with the iPhone itself ?

In the current release of iSilo, the initial default encoding is assumed to be UTF-8, so for any documents you open that do not have a specified encoding (e.g., "Unknown Encoding" as shown in the Document Information view), then such documents will be assumed to be encoded using Unicode UTF-8. The initial default is changing to Windows-1252 (Western European) in the update that Apple has just approved today (http://forum.isilo.com/showthread.php?t=4733). But for those who already have iSilo installed, it won't have an effect since you already have the default set as Unicode UTF-8, which happens the very first time you start iSilo.

So do the following: With one such document open, go to More/Options/Content/Encoding. There, set the Encoding to Windows-1252 and set Also Set As Defaults to On. Tap Read Options to go back to the Read Options view, where you should then tap Done to save the changes. Returning to the document list view will close the document and save the settings for the document. For any other documents which you previously opened which exhibit the behavior, you will need to set the encoding also, except that you do not have to set the Also Set As Defaults option to On, since you did it per above already. Any documents which you have not yet opened which do not have a specified encoding will now be assumed to have the Windows-1252 encoding.
