View Full Version : 4.0.5 install error

Downloaded the 4.0.5 installer today. Near the end of the installer process, it pops up and tells me "file not found".
I ran this shell (Terminal) command as an admin user to add write permission to the conduit directory (in the admin group) and avoid the installation error:
sudo chmod g+w '/Library/Application Support/Palm HotSync/Conduits'
Ran that again after installation, with '+' (plus) changed to '-' (minus).
Logfiles show the 4.0.5 conduit runs during HotSync but isn't installing files on the external SD card of my Tungsten E. More details about that later.

If it's a permissions issue then it sound like the same error that the Palm Desktop had on the first version of the installer.
Yeah, it's a similar issue.
Removing authentication with 4.0.5 is behind what can trigger this installation problem. I first read about the error on VersionTracker and posted the same workaround there.
Surprised this wasn't fixed during beta testing. I didn't know 4.0.5 was being beta tested 'til I noticed the non-beta release yesterday.

sjk, thanks for posting the workaround. You also seem to have knowledge of what can be done on the installer side to fix the issue there. Would you be able to explain what "removing authentication" means exactly?

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe he is referring to administrator authentication. Mac OS X provides a graphical way to elevate the normal user's privileges to the administrator level when required for installation.
Note: if the iSilo developers test Mac OS X using privileged accounts, this issue would never have shown up.

For example, the standard Apple MacOS X installer pops up a window to ask for user name and password of an administrator so that it can install stuff in privileged locations (ie, the Library folder). Don't know if the installer program your using for iSilo has that capability.
Sorry for the belated reply. E-mail notification for this subscribed thread didn't reach me and this is my first visit since posting here last month.
What Voltage Spike and gregjsmith said is correct. Pre-4.05 iSiloX installers prompted for an administrator username/password so they had permission to write in the protected HotSync conduits directory.
I just noticed the 4.1 betas; has this installer glitch been fixed? I'd check myself (and for other iSiloX issues before posting about 'em) but I'm not quite ready to jump into beta testing.

No, the issue has not been addressed in the current beta.
Pre-4.05 versions did not have the issue because they did not have a conduit to install. Version 4.05 includes the new iSiloX install conduit. The conduit is necessary for iSiloX to be able to install directly to storage cards during HotSync and the conduit needs to be located where all the conduits are located, which happens to be in a system directory.

The conduit is necessary for iSiloX to be able to install directly to storage cards during HotSync and the conduit needs to be located where all the conduits are located, which happens to be in a system directory. The conduit working has never worked for me. When I've used either a HotSync Destination of "External memory card" or a /Palm/Programs/iSilo Path the converted iSiloX files end up in the .../iSiloI directory but aren't transfered during HotSync. The conduit is enabled and the log shows it successfully runs, but no data transfers. I've been using the ".../Files to Install/SecureDigital (SD) Card" destination which HotSync's to /Palm/Launcher on the SD card.
I can write up a clearer explanation in a new thread if that'll help... just wanted to give that terse report for now.
The conduit working has never worked for me.I installed iSiloX 4.10b4 yesterday and the conduit now works fine(!) I've also been using Missing Sync for Palm OS 4.0 instead of Palm Desktop HotSync for a couple weeks and hadn't tried the older iSilo Install conduit with it so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it. Still working on getting files to install to a specific directory on the external card, if that's possible [edit: which I've since figured out after reading details in the manual].
