A few minutes ago, I came across (at Memoware.com) a PalmReader version of the CIA's World Fact Book 2003. Up until now, I have been using the iSilo version of this same work. Since I'm running short on available space in my SDIO card and since the PalmReader version, at 5.58 MB's, is only a fraction of the size of the iSilo version (roughly 10 MB's), I downloaded and installed (to my card) the PalmReader version.

On satisfying myself that the PalmReader version was satisfactory, I deleted (from my SDIO card) the iSilo version of the the CIA World Fact Book 2003, confident that 1) I would free up nearly 4.5 MB's of space and 2) I would still be able to use my iSilo reader (version 4.05 for Palm OS) to read a handful of other works (mainly, various New York statutes) in that format.

To my horror, I see that when I now try to open iSilo (from the main menu screen), I am unable to do so and and am instead met with the following error message:

"The document could not be opened. It may be corrupt or it may have been deleted from the volume."

After clicking on the obligatory "OK," I am taken to a "Fatal Alert -- Fatal Exception" screen. I must then perform a soft reset, which renders my Tungsten T3 operative (thank G_d). Nonetheless, if I try again to access iSilo, I am, again, shut out and am, again, presented with the same error messages, requiring, ultimately, another soft reset.

If there are knowledgeable iSilo aficionados out there, I would much appreciate receiving constructive suggestions as to how best to proceed.

One idea that has occurred to me is to delete the iSilo software components on my T3 (the handheld itself), reinstall iSilo, and hope for the best. IF that's the way to go -- and I am not at all sure that it is -- I am not certain what, precisely, these components are. Three such components I am sure of, namely:

1) iSilo -- 473K

2) iSilo Display Sample -- 50K

3) iSilo Manual -- 58K

A fourth item, ISDKLib-STD -- 245K, may or may not anything to do with iSilo.

Thanks in advance for sharing your wisdom -- and for helping me to restore, safely, a working version of iSilo!

Jeff

Not sure why it would have an error, but try this:

1. Delete the PalmReader version of the Factbook from the card. The problem may be caused by iSilo attempting to open the PalmReader version.
2. Start iSilo. Since the PalmReader version of the document is no longer there, iSilo should start in the document list view.
3. After doing the above, you can then recopy the PalmReader version of the Factbook to the card.

Let us know whether that resolves the issue.

I took your suggestion and deleted the PalmReader version of CIA World Fact Book 2003 from my SDIO card. Unfortunately, when I tried to open iSilo -- I had to try from the main menu; it was already gone from the list view -- I received *precisely* the same error message as before, namely:

"The document could not be opened. It may be corrupt or it may have been deleted from the volume."

As before, I had no alternative but to make my way from the obligatory "OK," which led to a "Fatal Alert -- Fatal Exception" screen. As before, on performing a soft reset, I recovered the use of my T3 (but not the use of iSilo).

My instinct -- and it's only that -- is either to 1) reinstall iSilo (again, I was using 4.05 for Palm OS) or, more likely, to first DELETE iSilo, then reinstall it, then see if the reinstalled iSilo will operate (including whether it will open the several iSilo formatted documents I still have on the T3).

I very much appreciate your efforts and welcome your continued input on this vexing problem.

Jeff

P.S. IF you think I should first delete iSilo, three obvious "candidates" for deletion are 1) iSilo, 2) iSilo Display Sample, and 3) iSilo Manual. Are there any *other* components I should be deleting? In particular, is ISDKLib-STD (245K) part of iSilo's software?

ISDKLib-STD is not part of iSilo.

You can try deleting iSilo and then reinstalling. But note that if you do so, you will lose categorizations for your documents and document specific settings.

Before doing so, maybe we can have a look at your iSilo saved preferences to see whether it is trying to open a document and if so which document. You will need to email the saved preferences file to http://www.iSilo.com/img/email.jpg. On your desktop PC, you can find the "Saved_Preferences.PRC" file in the "Backup" directory of a sub-directory named after your HotSync name in the directory where you installed the Palm desktop.
