OK, I caught the bookmark bug that I described below happening at full power.
So maybe it's not a hardware failure (I guess it's possible that the file got corrupted earlier by trying to save to the stick with insufficient power so that it fails x bookmarks later or something...)
Anyway, I'd been making a bunch of backups of a file that had been corrupted once already and I caught it right before it fails. I have a large (1300 kb) file with 38 bookmarks that looks fine and all the bookmarks work OK, but if you try adding one more bookmark, the bookmarks get corrupted.
I can e-mail you the file if you're interested.
