View Full Version : Losing bookmarks in updated files

I'm new to Isilo, only been using a few months. My problem is that I lose my bookmarks when I update the file.

The file is a large file of about five megs in size that contains all of our rule books. This file gets updated about once a month. When I update, my bookmarks disappear.

First month I just installed the new file and the old one disappeared along with the bookmarks.

Second month I deleted the file first then installed the new file with the same result.

Also the first month I had the bookmarks in the "Document Bookmarks" and the second month I stored them in the "Local Bookmarks" since I thought it stored them in an area other than the file itself.

Is there any way I can keep the bookmarks and still be able to update the file on a regular basis.

Thanks,
TripleSea

You have the right idea: you should use "Local Bookmarks" to store the documents in the local database rather than the document. You didn't by any chance delete the document before updating when using the "local" bookmarks, did you?

(Note that I have never had a problem with bookmarks when I simply overwrite the older file.)

Document bookmarks are stored in the document file, so if you overwrite the document file, such as when you perform an update, the bookmarks are overwritten as well since they are in the same file. So you should use local bookmarks, which are stored in the document settings on the device separate from the document file.

Hi, Yes, I first deleted the old file. Then, with the new file on my computer waiting for the next hot-sync to load up, I hot sync'd the pda. And when I re-opened the new file on the PDA the bookmarks were gone.

(Note that I have never had a problem with bookmarks when I simply overwrite the older file.)

So what you are saying is that I should just leave the old file on the pda and when I hot-sync with my computer the new file will just overwrite the old file and leave the Bookmarks there to use with the updated file?

Oh, I do hope this works! I love the Isilo program and the bookmarks are wonderful, or they were. I do hope this works. The new one won't come out for another couple weeks, or so, so I won't know until then.

Thanks so much for the help!

Hello, thanks for the reply.

So, what I should do as I understand it is to save the bookmarks in "Local Bookmarks" and then when updating the file do NOT erase the file first. Just let the hot-sync overwrite the old file with the new. Doing it this way should leave the bookmarks there to still use.

I will certainly give this a try when the next update comes along in about two weeks.

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, your understanding is correct.
