I found this in a review of the axim x51v:

MEMORY PROBLEMS
"While the X51v has many nice improvements when compared to its predecessor, not all the problems have been solved.
For example, this handheld still runs into difficulties when dealing with very big files.
Based on my experience, I can tell you that every time I open a really large audio file -- as many podcasts are -- the X51v's File Explorer will no longer show that I have a CompactFlash card inserted.
And there are other problems, too. One of my favorite features of this Axim is the utility that Dell has added that shows all the applications that are currently running. After opening a document bigger than about 50 megabytes, this utility no longer works correctly, and the only way to fix it is to soft reset the Pocket PC."

The test isilo files that you converted for me were 150mB and 50mB respectively. Could opening these large files be causing the CF card to disappear?
